A scan-defined setup, tested honestly

Suppose TrendSpider's scanner found a setup you like: price crosses above an automatically drawn resistance line on the daily chart while the 4-hour RSI is above 50. The strategy tester says it has worked. Here is what turning that into a result you can trust looks like, step by step, in any honest tool:

  1. Make the rule reproducible. An auto-drawn resistance line is a proprietary calculation; you cannot backtest it elsewhere. Replace it with a definable equivalent — a 20-bar high, a Donchian channel — and accept that the result will differ. That difference is itself information.
  2. Fill on the next bar. The cross is confirmed at the daily close; you can buy at the next open. Set the fill there.
  3. Charge costs. Spread, fees, and slippage scaled to the day's range. Then 1.5× them.
  4. Split by time with a gap. Tune the lookback and RSI threshold on the first seven years; grade on the last three, with an embargo of at least your exit horizon between them.
  5. Walk it forward. Re-tune on a rolling window and stitch the out-of-sample pieces.
  6. Read the trades. Open the ten largest winners and losers and check they look like the setup you described, not like something else that happened to fit.
